FED:Abbott says no pairs for carbon tax debate

CANBERRA, Aug 23 AAP - Federal Opposition Leader Tony Abbott has warned the government
the coalition will not allow MPs to be paired when Labor's carbon tax legislation is debated
in parliament.

"There will be no pairs under any circumstances," he told the coalition joint parties
meeting in Canberra on Tuesday.

The decision could hamper the travel plans of government MPs outside of Canberra or
overseas when the debate begins.

Mr Abbott said it was up to the government to decide when the bill is introduced, and
that he expected every coalition MP to be present.

Under a long-standing parliamentary convention, the major parties "pair" MPs if a member
is unable to vote due to illness or other circumstances.

In brief reference to continuing allegations that federal Labor MP Craig Thomson misused
his union credit card, Mr Abbott cautioned MPs not to be diverted from the carbon tax
issue, which is unpopular with some Australians and industries.

The government plans to introduce a $23 per tonne price on carbon to be paid by big
polluters from July 1, 2012.

FED:Centrelink backs down on later start times
Eds: Changing "and" to "an" in intro

CANBERRA, Feb 11 AAP - Centrelink appears to have backed down on a plan to open branches
half an hour later.

The federal government's welfare agency has since January reduced customer service
hours in cyclone and flood-hit areas of Queensland and Victoria.

Opening times in those areas have temporarily been pushed back to 8.30am, from 8am,
so staff can process paperwork before serving customers.

But the Community and Public Sector Union told AAP that Centrelink staff around Australia
were sent memos this week saying the later opening hours would be extended nationally
from Monday, February 14.

Management has now apparently backed down.

The union's deputy national president Lisa Newman said Centrelink's general manger
of people services, Sue Chapman, contacted her on Friday afternoon advising her that Centrelink
would not proceed with the later opening hours.

A spokesman for Human Services Minister Tanya Plibersek, however, denied there was
ever a plan for a national reduction in opening hours.

Ms Newman said Centrelink staff were worried how aggressive customers would react to
later opening times.

"Unfortunately client aggression is already an issue at some Centrelink offices," she said.

"Changing opening hours without notice or consultation is not going to improve things."

MELBOURNE, Aug 28 AAP - Two people are facing armed robbery charges after a shopper
was stabbed with scissors during a bag-snatching attempt.

A woman was walking to her car at the Braybrook Shopping Centre in Melbourne's west

The young woman stabbed the shopper and tried to grab her handbag, police said.

When the shopper fought back, a man joined the attack and allegedly assaulted her while
trying to loosen her grip on the bag.

The pair eventually gave up and sped away in a nearby vehicle empty-handed.

Police arrested two people hours later.

A 31-year-old man and a 25-year-old woman, both of St Albans, have been charged with
attempted armed robbery, intentionally causing serious injury and various assault-related

Vic: Williams thought he was safe in jail: Stary

MELBOURNE, April 21 AAP - Gangland killer Carl Williams, who was bashed to death in
prison on Monday, thought he was safe behind bars.

His lawyer, Rob Stary, said Williams believed he was secure in the Acacia unit of the
high security Barwon Prison.

When asked if Williams told him he feared for his safety, Mr Stary replied: "No, on the contrary.

"Being in the state's strictest regime where he was constantly monitored ... we thought
he was secure, he thought he was secure and the authorities thought that he was secure,"

he told the Nine Network on Wednesday.

"There has obviously been a very, very serious lapse."

Mr Stary welcomed the Office of Police Integrity's decision to oversee the police investigation
into Williams' death.

"They bring with it a pool of expertise and various powers, including coercive powers
of investigation," he said.

Williams, 39, suffered serious head injuries after he was allegedly bashed about 12.50pm
(AEST) on Monday.

He suffered a heart attack and could not be revived.

A fellow inmate, 36, is charged with one count of murder and appeared via video link
from prison at the Geelong Magistrates' Court on Tuesday.

Fed: Pink and husband Carey Hart hold free motocross shows in Oz

By Alyssa Braithwaite, National Entertainment Writer

SYDNEY, April 29 AAP - Pink's husband Carey Hart will hold a series of free motocross
events around her upcoming Funhouse tour, as the couple rebuild their relationship in
Australia.

Based on his tattoo shop and clothing brand, the Hart and Huntington Freestyle Tour
will be a celebration of motocross and the associated art, fashion, music, bikes, cars
and culture.

The three-hour events will be held ahead of selected shows on Pink's 42-date Australian
tour, in Melbourne, Newcastle, Sydney, Brisbane, Gold Coast.

Hart, a freestyle motocross (FMX) star, came up with the idea of putting on and starring
in the free shows as a way to give something back to Australian fans.

"It is tough for people out there nowadays to go spend a lot of money on a ticket to
go to a tour or music festival," Hart told AAP from Las Vegas.

"Australia is very good to Pink and that's why it was so exciting for me.

"If we're going to do something free and give back to people, it's in Australia."

Pink and Hart met in Las Vegas at the 2001 X Games and married in 2006.

In February 2008 the star couple announced they had separated, but they have recently
started seeing each other again.

Hart said the Australian tour was a chance to spend some quality time together.

"We're definitely working on our relationship," he said.

"This was actually one of the first steps. We had to come up with a way to be able
to both go to work and both see each other.

"It's going to be a very exciting time for both of us to actually go to Australia and
tour together for two months."

Hart set up the Hart and Huntington brand five years ago with his first tattoo shop
at Las Vegas' Hard Rock Hotel.

He now owns four successful shops and has branched into a Hart and Huntington clothing line.

The brand is now available in Australia, and Hart is now considering setting up shop Down Under.

"We're branching out and we might possibly do some in Europe, but the top of my list
is to do one in Australia," he said.

"The fan base is so amazing in Australia for action sports and tattooing alike, it
just seems like the next progression for what I want to do."

Hart said he hoped to convert some of Pink's fans into motocross fans on the tour,
and is looking forward to hitting the surf and the open road with Pink during their time
off.

"Me and Pink are talking about maybe doing a couple of motorcycle road trips, jump
on some highways and rip around the countryside," he said.

NSW: Councils will receive grants for war memorials

SYDNEY, April 10 AAP - Communities in NSW will be given grants to protect and restore
war memorials, NSW Premier Morris Iemma says.

The $250,000 Community War Memorials Fund grants would be handed out twice a year,
Mr Iemma said in a statement today.

"Cities and towns across the state have memorials honouring the thousands of NSW residents
who made the supreme sacrifice for our country," he said.

"Those war memorials are among the most precious objects in our community. They were
built - almost universally - by local fundraising and belong to the people."

NSW Returned and Serviceman's League state president Don Rowe welcomed the funding
announcement, saying it would allow many communities, particularly in regional areas,
to make much-needed repairs to their war memorials.

"A great many of these war memorials have been built for 80 or 90 years and, sadly,
a number of them are coming into disrepair," Mr Rowe said today.

"A lot of them are crumbling.

"This ... will ensure that those memorials are fixed up, and remain a prominent meeting
place for the community on ANZAC day and Remembrance Day to ensure that sacrifice is never
forgotten."

Among the first recipients of the grant are Blue Mountains City Council, Eurobodalla
Shire Council and the Royal Botanic Gardens.

The grants will be decided by a State War Memorials Committee which will announce further
recipients around ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day.

Qld: State of decay

AAP General News (Australia)

Qld: State of decay

By Paul Osborne

BRISBANE, Dec 7 AAP - Decay has been on the minds of government and opposition figures
alike in Queensland this week.

While Premier Anna Bligh finally dealt with the ongoing embarrassment of Queensland
being the only state not to have fluoride in its drinking water, the Liberal Party was
dealing with decay in their popular support amid a bitter leadership battle and a federal
election loss.

Ironically, one of the key figures behind the Liberal leadership stoush - Gold Coast
MP John-Paul Langbroek - is a dentist.

The government finally bit the bullet on water fluoridation, setting out a timetable
to ensure 80 per cent of Queenslanders would be drinking fluoridated water within two
years, growing to 95 per cent by 2012.

The move was widely welcomed as essential to improving dental health, especially in children.

It was the one positive in a week that was dominated by the final result of a build-up
of plaque in the Liberal Party, which started with Bruce Flegg seizing the leadership
from Bob Quinn in August 2006.

Sixteen months on from Dr Flegg's coup, he has been replaced by his deputy Mark McArdle.

Dr Flegg was an inexperienced, first-term MP when he seized the leadership.

The former Brisbane GP's leadership takeover was a key trigger for the September 2006
state election as then premier Peter Beattie took advantage of opposition disarray.

Coalition strategists had to tear up their plans for a campaign involving the experienced
team of Nationals leader Lawrence Springborg and Mr Quinn and find a way to promote a
unified face to voters.

At their first media conference, Mr Springborg and Dr Flegg could not answer a simple
question about who would be premier if they won government - a question that dogged them
for the rest of their failed campaign.

The campaign itself was an unmitigated disaster for the coalition, with three notable examples.

Dr Flegg was asked to leave a shopping centre for failing to obtain permission to do
a campaign walk-through.

In a radio interview he admitted to having "blonde moments".

And at a media conference on the teaching of Australian history he failed to correctly
answer journalists' questions on the date of arrival of the Second Fleet (1790), or the
person after whom Brisbane was named (former governor of NSW Sir Thomas Brisbane).

The election propelled Tim Nicholls, a 42-year-old former lawyer and Brisbane City
councillor, into parliament.

After six months of sitting in parliament watching the Liberal leader fail to gain
any traction with voters, the Clayfield MP - backed by party powerbrokers Santo Santoro
and Michael Caltabiano - went public with his desire to challenge.

Figures within the Liberal Party organisation were also concerned Dr Flegg was making
the Howard government's re-election chances more difficult.

The problem was highlighted by Dr Flegg's opposition to a project the then prime minister
had personally promoted - the Goodna bypass in Brisbane's outer west.

But Mr Nicholls failed to gain the support of four other colleagues needed to unseat Dr Flegg.

Fears of the Queensland Liberal "brand" being stained were given fresh impetus with
the election of the Rudd Labor government, on the back of a strong result for the ALP
in the Sunshine State.

The Nicholls backers were determined to fix the problem and a media conference was
called to publicly announce a challenge, despite Mr Nicholls and proposed deputy Mr Langbroek
knowing they did not have the numbers to win.

"I think the outcome of the federal election has ... led to a spur for renewal from
the Liberal Party," Mr Nicholls told reporters.

A meeting of the party's eight MPs was called but Dr Flegg refused to open the leadership
to a vote.

The Liberal Party's state council then stepped in, accusing Dr Flegg of breaching a
long-held convention of allowing a vote on the leadership if an MP demanded a challenge.

Dr Flegg then agreed to a fresh vote and offered to step aside, but snubbed Mr Nicholls
by publicly calling for his deputy Mark McArdle to become leader.

After a farcical day of debate, which amusingly included media commentary by Monty
Python star Eric Idle - who happened to be staying at the same hotel as the Liberal MPs
were meeting - the party remained leaderless.

Asked what he thought of the leadership fight being labelled "Pythonesque", Idle told
reporters: "I think that's slightly insulting to Monty Python, don't you? I think we are
slightly more successful."

The option of drawing a name out of a hat was floated as a serious option by Gold Coast
MP Ray Stevens before yesterday's meeting.

But the party finally compromised and Mr Nicholls settled on the second prize of being
deputy to 50-year-old former solicitor, Mark McArdle - the Liberals' fifth leader in a
decade.

Mr McArdle admitted Queenslanders now had a "negative view" of the Liberal Party, but
put a positive spin on the outcome.

"I'm going to say to the people of Queensland right now don't gauge us today - look
at what we do over time, look at how we plan and work together for the future," he said.

But it may take many months for the Liberals to brush up their image after such a public
gnashing.

Fed: PM to fund Qld water pipeline

BRISBANE, April 24 AAP - Prime Minister John Howard has announced the government will
invest $408 million in Queensland's western corridor recycled water project.

Speaking in Brisbane this afternoon, Mr Howard and Water Minister Malcolm Turnbull
announced half the cost of the project would be met after the Queensland government sought
federal support.

However, the funding is being given on the condition that the state government provide
full financial details within the next 30 days and that the interests of farmers in the
Lockyer Valley, west of Brisbane, are met.

Mr Howard said although water infrastructure was a state government responsibility,
the federal government would make the payment, which will be the largest under the national
water initiative, to address the "chronic water problems" of the state's southeast.

"I want the project to go ahead. I want it to be a success," Mr Howard said.

He said he had not felt any pressure from the federal opposition, who have said they
will fund half of the cost of the project if they won government at the next election.

The decision followed a cabinet meeting in Brisbane today.

Vic: Fire-fighters home for xmas as rains ease fires

MELBOURNE, Dec 23 AAP - Rain and milder temperatures have eased the bushfire threat
in Victoria's northeast, but authorities warn it will be a long time before the flames
are out.

"Even with the change coming through and cooler conditions for the next four or five
days, these fires are going to continue way beyond that and local residents need to be
prepared for the long haul," CFA state duty officer Gary Weir said.

Between 5mm and 10mm of rain fell across much of the fire-ravaged region last night,
reducing the immediate threat to the Mansfield and Ovens areas and around Mt Buller where
a blaze raged earlier in the night.

Authorities at the individual fire fronts will decide this morning how many of the
3000 firefighters on patrol can go home for Christmas.

A crew of New Zealand firefighters will fly home to Auckland and Christchurch today.

All but one of the 47-strong crew will head home this morning, leaving behind a mate
who is still receiving treatment for smoke inhalation and burns. He's expected to go home
on Wednesday.

A crew of 36 firefighter from the ACT will also go home today.

About one third to half of the remaining fire fighters will be flown or bussed home
for Christmas, but they are expected to be recalled when the rain has stopped long enough
to allow a planned back burn along the major fire's southern front.

The back burn across a stretch of rugged, inaccessible bushland will join the major
blaze with the smaller deliberately lit Coopers Creek fire in the northern Gippsland area,
Mr Weir said.

The larger fire will be more easily managed.

This morning fire had burnt or was burning on 871,000ha of bushland, the largest stretching
across Victorian's northeast to the Gippsland region.

But as of 8am (AEDT) no populated area was under threat.

"The fire behaviour now is relatively gentle, this rainfall has reduced the level fo
alert," Mr Weir said.

ADELAIDE, April 10 AAP - Parts of the Adelaide Hills will be set on fire this week
in a bid to reduce the fuel load.

The first burn today will involve 31 hectares of the Black Hill Conservation Park.

Mid-way through the week a 14-hectare burn will target the Cleland Conservation Park.

Allan Holmes, from the Department of Environment and Heritage, said the autumn burns
picked up where work left off before the fire season in December.

"Nine burns in a range of parks and reserves are planned for the Adelaide Hills this
season," he said.

"All of our burns share the same objective and that is to develop a strategic network
of fuel reduced areas across the hills."

Areas of reduced fuel load increase the chance of firefighters bringing bushfires under
control and also provide safer conditions for fire crews.

Netergy Microelectronics and Alcatel Announce VoDSL Reference Design And Development Platform.

First Demonstration of Voice-Over-DSL Product Will Be at SuperComm 2001

ATLANTA, June 5 /PRNewswire/ --

Netergy Microelectronics, Inc., a subsidiary of Netergy Networks, Inc., (Nasdaq: NTRG), and Alcatel (Nasdaq: ALA) today announced a new development platform containing ADSL and ATM technology from Alcatel, and voice-over-packet (VoP) technology from Netergy Microelectronics. The result is a common firmware and semiconductor platform available from both companies. The prototype platform is being demonstrated in Netergy Micro's booth (#2020) at SuperComm in Atlanta this week.

The reference platform leverages intellectual property and expertise from both companies and has resulted in a product that contains a great deal of new technology. It is capable of supporting full ADSL data rates, RFC1483 bridging, PPPoA or PPPoE, DHCP server, IP routing, NAT, ILMI, and a variety of other networking functions. The software is capable of supporting both VoDSL and VoIP-over-DSL applications. There is hardware support for user definable virtual circuits. Up to four channels of G.711, or G.726 with G.165/G.168 compliant echo cancellation are also supported in the VoDSL configuration.

The reference platform, targeted for customer-premise equipment manufacturers, consists of two major subsections: The ADSL modem and the voice subsystem. The ADSL modem is based on the latest Alcatel DynaMiTe(TM) technology. The modular platform architecture allows customers to seamlessly adopt future modem chip sets and firmware upgrades. The voice subsystem is based on Netergy Micro's recently announced Audacity-T2U voice-over-packet processor and Veracity software. Audacity-T2U is a high performance system-on-a-chip that contains a unified RISC/DSP core, an Ethernet 10/100 Base-T MAC, and an ATM Utopia interface. The on-chip memory eliminates the need for any external SRAM or DRAM, thereby minimizing the overall system cost, and aids in providing the smallest footprint for a DSL Integrated Access Device (IAD).

The analog phone interface uses Alcatel's newly developed short haul POTS chip set. The solution offers maximum flexibility through software control and requires few passive externals (R- and C's) for operation. Country dependent requirements are all software configurable. Alcatel is the first to offload such functions into the POTS interface. This architecture allows the realization of multiple analog telephone interfaces in a very small PCB area, making it ideal for the IAD application.

"Voice-enabling our modem reference platform was the natural next step in the evolution of our ADSL technology.
