First Demonstration of Voice-Over-DSL Product Will Be at SuperComm 2001
ATLANTA, June 5 /PRNewswire/ --
Netergy Microelectronics, Inc., a subsidiary of Netergy Networks, Inc., (Nasdaq: NTRG), and Alcatel (Nasdaq: ALA) today announced a new development platform containing ADSL and ATM technology from Alcatel, and voice-over-packet (VoP) technology from Netergy Microelectronics. The result is a common firmware and semiconductor platform available from both companies. The prototype platform is being demonstrated in Netergy Micro's booth (#2020) at SuperComm in Atlanta this week.
The reference platform leverages intellectual property and expertise from both companies and has resulted in a product that contains a great deal of new technology. It is capable of supporting full ADSL data rates, RFC1483 bridging, PPPoA or PPPoE, DHCP server, IP routing, NAT, ILMI, and a variety of other networking functions. The software is capable of supporting both VoDSL and VoIP-over-DSL applications. There is hardware support for user definable virtual circuits. Up to four channels of G.711, or G.726 with G.165/G.168 compliant echo cancellation are also supported in the VoDSL configuration.
The reference platform, targeted for customer-premise equipment manufacturers, consists of two major subsections: The ADSL modem and the voice subsystem. The ADSL modem is based on the latest Alcatel DynaMiTe(TM) technology. The modular platform architecture allows customers to seamlessly adopt future modem chip sets and firmware upgrades. The voice subsystem is based on Netergy Micro's recently announced Audacity-T2U voice-over-packet processor and Veracity software. Audacity-T2U is a high performance system-on-a-chip that contains a unified RISC/DSP core, an Ethernet 10/100 Base-T MAC, and an ATM Utopia interface. The on-chip memory eliminates the need for any external SRAM or DRAM, thereby minimizing the overall system cost, and aids in providing the smallest footprint for a DSL Integrated Access Device (IAD).
The analog phone interface uses Alcatel's newly developed short haul POTS chip set. The solution offers maximum flexibility through software control and requires few passive externals (R- and C's) for operation. Country dependent requirements are all software configurable. Alcatel is the first to offload such functions into the POTS interface. This architecture allows the realization of multiple analog telephone interfaces in a very small PCB area, making it ideal for the IAD application.
"Voice-enabling our modem reference platform was the natural next step in the evolution of our ADSL technology. Netergy Micro's expertise in this area has been instrumental in facilitating this progression and we are extremely pleased with the result of our joint collaboration," said Leon Cloetens, Vice President and General Manager for Alcatel's microelectronics activities. "We look forward to continuing this relationship and building on the strong technological foundation this collaboration has produced."
"We consider it a major achievement to be partnering with the ADSL chip set market leader," said Dr. Philip Bednarz, Netergy Micro's President and Chief Executive Officer. "Netergy Micro's flexible voice-over-packet (VOP) Sound Solutions are designed to address all broadband network access technologies. The VoDSL reference platform which has resulted from this joint technology development further demonstrates the strength of Netergy Micro's voice-enabling strategy."
The Alcatel VoDSL reference platform will be available in the third quarter of 2001. A static unit can be seen at the Alcatel booth (# 717 in Hall A) or a live demonstration can be seen at Netergy Microelectronics booth (#2020).
