FED: PM savages ABC over Indonesian visit coverage
Prime Minister John Howard has savaged the ABC over its coverage of his recent visitto Indonesia, personally calling the corporation's managing director, RUSSELL BALDING,before an on-air apology was made.
The Australian newspaper says the complaint involved a report filed from Indonesiaon Saturday night.
The paper says the the introduction to the report misleadingly suggested Jakarta wouldregard any war on Iraq as an attack on Islam.
The report itself focused on such claims made by Indonesian Islamic groups -- but didnot back up the introduction with any evidence from the government of President MEGAWATISUKARNOPUTRI.
Last night, the ABC broadcast an apology for failing to make the distinction clearafter Mr HOWARD confronted ABC journalist JIM MIDDLETON in the lobby of a Jakarta hotel.
The Australian says Mr HOWARD told Mr MIDDLETON the mistake has affected Australia'snational interests.
