Vic: Service stations to show ethanol content from tomorrow

MELBOURNE, April 30 AAP - Victorian service stations must show the ethanol contentof fuel at the pump from tomorrow, or risk fines of up to $60,000.

Individuals could be fined $24,000 under the new laws, which make Victoria the firststate to enforce mandatory ethanol labelling.

Consumer Affairs Minister John Lenders said department staff would monitor compliancethrough random spot checks and by responding to complaints.

"Consumers have the right to know what they are getting for their money," Mr Lenders said.

"The new Victorian labelling laws will give consumers greater confidence when buying fuel."

Pumps free of ethanol do not have to be labelled.

The laws were introduced in response to reports fuel with more than 10 per cent ethanolcontent reduces fuel economy and accelerates wear on engine components and fuel lines.
